Design Project - Advanced Planting Design
Throughout the course, the concept of garden design and the role plant use and plant selection plays in that context is discussed. Emphasis is on the knowledge of plants and plant composition for well-designed garden settings and on garden design as a contemporary phenomenon and movement. The course is addressing the integration of different values in plant design, such as esthetics, history, ecology, recreation, maintenance, social and pedagogic values. Plant knowledge and design skills are developed through lectures, literature, seminars, study visits, design projects and written assignments. Students will be trained to use a wide range of plants in the design of gardens and parks to understand the possibilities and limitations of plants and to use plant design as a mean to fulfill the needs in various garden settings. Students will also be trained in reflecting upon the correlation between proposed designs and illustration on the one hand and visions for garden character and development on the other. Trends and main features of garden design are discussed throughout the course.

Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide advanced studies in planting design for gardens and other green spaces.
After completion of the course, the student should be able to:
design and construct plantings at different scale levels and for different purposes
use a wide range of plants to create variation in garden design
understand the potentials and limitations of different plants in garden design
discuss the meaning in different types of gardens, with emphasis on plants and vegetation
reflect on trends and main features in planting design of the latest century
Content
The course is focused on planting design as a contemporary and international movement, but also puts the phenomenon of planting design and use of garden plants in a historical, social and political context. The emphasis is on the complexity of designing with garden plants as a living material. This involves aesthetics, dynamics, ecology and maintenance, as well as social and educational values. The students get to know tools and techniques for designing with plants in landscapes and gardens of different sizes and for different purposes. The course comprises design assignments accompanied by lectures, tutorials, seminars (compulsory), excursions (compulsory), literature studies and a written paper.
The course gives 15 skills training credits for students in the Landscape Architecture Programme.
Grading form

Approved participation in compulsory elements and seminars. Successful completion of exam and exercises.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
