Objectives

The main aim of the course is to use different ways of working with design in the urban environment, and – supported by design theory and good examples – apply, document and present design processes, individually and in group work.

After the course the student should be able to:

• reflect on and communicate urban landscape design and its processes

• demonstrate an analytic approach: visually, verbally and in writing

• understand contextual relations and analyse and discuss what may constitute sustainable design within landscape architecture

• develop and test individual working methods and design solutions connected to design theories that are applicable within landscape architecture

• demonstrate skills in different methods in landscape visualisation for landscape design, e.g. digital tools, model building and analogous sketching

Content

The course deals with elements that in different ways affect the interaction between analysis and development of methods and concepts through studies of design theory via sketching to the final design proposal. Urban landscape design is the focus of the course, based on one or more real or simulated scenarios.

Landscape visualisation is an important theme throughout the course and contributes to increase the student’s awareness of the interplay between contextual relations and concept development. The students are encouraged to experimental approaches, where analyses and evaluation are mixed with theoretical elements. There is a heavy emphasis on performing applied tasks as well as understanding the subject. The different elements of the course enable the students to gain knowledge in interaction with the relevant profession practice.

Scheduled exercises, seminars and study visits are mandatory.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Examination consists of written and oral presentations. Approved written and oral reporting and project work. Participation in compulsory components.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.

The course is adressed to students in Horticultural Management Programme - Garden Design, and the Landscape Engineer Programme - Alnarp, independent students and exchange students.



Courses in the main area of landscape planning from SLU are counted as landscape architecture in the eligibility review.
