Sustainable development of the urban landscape, theory course
Information from the course leader
Välkommen till Hållbar utveckling av stadslandskapet, teorikurs!
Kursintroduktionen hålls måndag 28 augusti kl. 9-10 i Stora Sessionssalen i Slottet (våning 2).

Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the students insight into how planning and management may be organized to support a more sustainable development in a municipality. The students are going to achieve the necessary knowledge needed in order to develop the urban landscape for a more sustainable society, using urban outdoor planning as a tool. In order for a long term development to be successful, the planning needs to be linked to the management, and ways to accomplish this is discussed in the course. The course uses different theoretical principles of planning and critically analyse the use of different solutions for a sustainable urban landscape.
The students will, after the course is finished:
know alternative strategies for a sustainable development to complement current practice in practical planning and management situations.
Be able to address practical planning and managements situations in a deliberative way with inter and intra disciplinary insights.
Be able to discuss and reflect, both orally and in writing, around different ways to plan and manage the urban landscape
Understand and be able to analyse the processes of planning and management and changes to the landscape in relation to political, economic, environmental, social and technical aspects.
Content
The course is addressing the development of the urban landscape from the view of both the public and private stakeholders with focus on actors and processes and with global insights.
Local governance and policy documents is studied to evaluate the possibilities for integration and conflicts of interest. A mixture of planning and management theory is evaluated against. Both separate documents and practical changes in the physical infrastructure and housing structure will be studied in relation to environmental factors like climate change and global commitments and agreements. Both local and regional perspectives are addressed to meet the extent of different environmental and social challenges.
Case studies are performed in close cooperation with host municipalities and will aim for long-term development solutions for a sustainable society with the challenges that are prominent in that particular municipality in focus. A description of the current situation is done were the most important current landscape related challenges are identified, planning activities and actions to meet these challenges is discussed and alternative solutions is suggested to fit the case.
