The aim of the PhD project is to find potential methods to adapt boreal forest regeneration practices to local environments to increase the ability to obtain a successful seedling establishment. Our hypotheses are 1) It is possible to improve early survival and growth of tree seedlings in the regeneration phase of boreal silviculture by adapting practices better to local environment conditions and 2) It is possible to shorten the time lag between harvest and establishment of a new generation of trees.
The goal is that the thesis will increase understanding of how we best can use our knowledge about the interaction between seedlings and their growing environment to improve the ability to obtain aimed regeneration goals in boreal forest silviculture, both in the present and future climate scenarios. If we become better at adapting practices to the various growing environments, we will be better prepared for environment development in a changing climate.
