Healthcare gardens
Kursen innehåller grundläggande kunskaper om människans samspel med utemiljön med särskild relevans för trädgårdar och parker vid hälso- och vårdinrättningar. Olika målgruppers särskilda egenskaper och behov studeras samt vad dessa innebär i samspelet med omgivningen. På kursen analyseras befintliga miljöers för- och nackdelar i förhållande till olika målgrupper och dessa analyser används för att utveckla gestaltningsförslag till hälsoträdgårdar.

Välkomna till kursen Hälsoträdgårdar som börjar på måndag den 31 augusti klockan 9.00. Vår plan är att hålla kursen både digitalt och på campus. Som det ser ut nu har vi ovanligt många studenter på kursen och därför har vi beslutat att köra kursintroduktionen och föreläsningarna första dagen enbart digitalt. The course intends to give an introduction to research about health promotion environments and basic knowledge within garden design that focuses special target groups’ different needs and preferences.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
account for the concept of gardens in healthcare and give examples of what healthcare gardens could contain and how they could be used
compile knowledge that is relevant to specific target groups’ interaction with the outdoor environment
draw conclusions about different target groups’ interaction with the outdoor environment
describe qualities and weaknesses in existing outdoor environments based on different target groups’ varying needs
give appropriate proposals for contents and design of healthcare gardens
communicate practical and theoretical knowledge of the field to professionals and laymen
Content
The course comprise two parts. The first part consists of an overview of basic concepts and literature relating to healthcare gardens and different target groups’ needs in the outdoor environment, for example children, older persons, ill or disabled individuals. The students conduct literature reviews on the special needs, behaviours and properties that characterise different target groups. Further , the students get to know and use different methods for site analyses with relevance for healthcare gardens. In the second part, the knowledge from the literature reviews are used to draw conclusions about different target groups’ interaction with outdoor environment. The advantages and disadvantages of different environments are discussed in relation to the different target groups’ specific needs to lead to appropriate proposals for contents and design of healthcare gardens.
The course contains lectures, workshops, practical assignments (compulsory), seminars (compulsory) and study visits (compulsory).

Attendance and active participation in compulsory components.
Passed written practical assignments including critical review and oral presentation.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
