Mycological knowledge - advanced basic course in mycology
Now it is possible to study mycology at SLU in Uppsala. We provide an introductory course and an advanced course for those who know some about fungi and mushrooms and want to learn more about their biology, ecology and taxonomy, learn to recognize the most common fungi and learn more about the importance of fungi for the ecosystems and for humans.
The courses are given in Swedish and are aimed at you who are student interested in fungi, or those who want to become a mushroom consultant (svampkonsulent) or work or want to work with fungi in your profession, for example within nature conservation. The courses are a development of the successful mycology courses that Elisabeth Bååth organized at Umeå University in 1993-2012. Svampkonsulenternas Riksförbund is participating as teachers in the courses.

Objectives
The course aims to provide an expanded knowledge of fungal biology and ecology. The course deals with modern systematics, phylogeny and identification techniques, as well as species knowledge. Central to the course are fungal adaptations and dynamics in ecosystems.
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
Describe the species diversity of fungi and their function from an ecosystem perspective.
Identify fungi using determination keys, be familiar with microscopy and DNA techniques for identification of fungi.
Describe and discuss general principles for fungal life cycles.
explain fungi’s occurrences in different environments, adaptations and dynamics using theory and an understanding of the importance of different, biotic or abiotic, factors.
Describe how fungi’s occurrences are affected by agriculture and forestry, including pathogenic fungi and fungi subjected to conservation efforts.
Account for various fungal metabolites and discuss why they are produced and their mechanism of action.
Content
The provide the student with broadened knowledge of the fungal kingdom, covering biology and ecology of fungi. The course provides expanded knowledge of systematics, phylogeny, modern identification techniques and the most important edible-, poison-, and confusion fungi. Fungal toxicology, microscopy techniques and current mycological research are covered during the course.
The course is given as a distance course. The teaching is conducted in the form of online lectures, excursions, project work. Exams, project work and seminars are mandatory.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written exam, approved oral and written presentations of seminars and individual work as well as participation in compulsory subjects.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Transitional provisions
The course was discontinued on May 23, 2022 (SLU.sfak.2022.3.1.1-82). Registered students that have not yet passed the course have the opportunity to do so within two years of the decision to discontinue the course. The department responsible for the course will during the two year phase-out period offer at least three retake sessions (renewed exams) and at least one opportunity to take part in compulsory elements. Students that wish to take an exam and/or take part in compulsory elements are asked to contact deputy head of department responsible for undergraduate education (or equivalent) at the responsible department to report that they wish to take an exam and/or take part in compulsory elements and to obtain information on when and where.Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Additional information
The course is given as a distance course, but it includes about one week’s excursion and exercises at and near the Ultuna campus, which may involve some travel expenses for the student. The course has been replaced by BI1381.
SLU is environmentally certified according to ISO 14001. A large part of our courses
