Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student knowledge of how the supply chain from forest up to raw material delivery at industry is structured and how the practical implementation is controlled. The course therefore intends to give the students ability to handle the possibilities and challenges that are connected to sustainable and resource efficient supply of industries with the right forest raw material at the right time and to the right price.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

• carry out and critically evaluate planning of wood supply from forest to industry

• analyse how planning, execution and control interact in the operational management of wood supply

• coordinate the different stages in the supply chain from forest to industry

• discuss and communicate own results with external parties as well as critically evaluate others’ results.

Content

The course focuses on the operational steps of industrial wood supply: How to go from plan to practical implementation with as efficient use of resources as possible. The course is divided into three main sections; Harvesting, transportation, and coordination and control. The harvesting and transportation sections include economics, service procurement, management, and control to fulfil delivery plans to industries. Coordination and control includes organization of activities along the supply chain. The course is shaped around practical exercises in individual activities as well as coordination of these. The course is mainly based on exercises, mixed with lectures of industrial representatives and literature seminars. Compulsory components in the course consist of guest lectures, seminars, exercises and case studies.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written examinations. Passed written and oral presentations of case studies. Passed exercises, seminars and approved participation in compulsory activities.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

Additional information

The course is the third and final in the so-called "RÅG-stråket", that is the name of a package of three courses á 15 credits that together give the forestry students deep skills in forestry raw material supply chain management. The two previous courses are "Raw Material Properties and Refining Processes" as well as "Forest Industrial Supply Strategy", which have their focuses on raw material needs and - requirements for different forest industrial processes respective on how forestry activities are structured in the long term to sustainably supply industries with necessary raw materials. This course focuses on the final steps of supply: to go from plan to practical implementation with as efficient use of resources as possible. The RÅG-courses are made to prepare the student for work in the forest supply chain as e.g. harvesting managers and transport coordinators. The course is, as well as other RÅG-courses, therefore highly realistic, with large participation from industry representatives and with realistic exercises to let the students train their skills. The course continues to build on knowledge in the subject forest technology as well as the two previous RÅG-courses.. Students who have passed results from one of the three courses; Forest Technology and Wood Technology (15 credits), Market-oriented Wood Supply (7.5 credits), and Forest Industrial Supply Strategy (15 credits) fulfil the special entry requirements about 7.5 credits in forest technology.
