Basic and applied ecology

Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment, and is vital for sustainability in enterprises that affect our living environment. Do you seek a broad understanding of ecology, with an applied perspective for green industries? We start by learning and understanding ecolgical theory and explanatory models. We deepen our understanding within your fields of interest, with a scientific outlook and applications within ecology. The course is taught in English.

Knowledge about ecology and its practical applications constitutes a central part of the realization of global development goals as well as Swedish environmental goals. This is necessary in order to reconcile the preservation of natural environments and biodiversity with food security and sustainable consumption. During the course we will cover the role of ecology in the whole chain from scientific study and ecological theory to its applied aspects in dealing with these issues.

During the early parts of the course we study ecological theory and general applications, via lectures and literature studies, seminars and excursions. With real-world examples based on your own interests we continue with studying implementations in projects and empirical studies on how ecology can affect the conditions for biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources in our green industries and landscape planning.

The first half of the course is taught together with BI1394 Basic ecology.
