Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide an overview on the importance of feeding for health and welfare in different animals.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
describe how feed can be stored and processed,
describe commonly used feedstuffs and their composition, and how animal requirements and nutrient composition of feeds can be expressed when evaluating feeds,
describe the nutrient-related and behavioural needs and feeding-related demands of farm animals, pet animals and wild animals, and how these can be fulfilled in different production systems,
describe the importance of feeding and feeds on health and welfare in different animal categories,
identify situations where feeding or feeds does not fulfil the requirements of the animal and reflect on the consequences,
present a project work in groups, both written and oral.
Content
The course cover different feeding systems, feed intake in animals and consequences of inadequate feeding. In the course, farm animals, pets and wild animals are compared. In addition, different techniques for preservation and processing of feeds are covered. The course consists of lectures, study visits, problem-based learning and exercises, as well as written and oral presentations of compiled literature related to feeding and feeds.

Passed written and oral examination, passed participation in compulsory exercises, study visits and problem-based moments.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
