The aim of the course is to provide knowledge, so that the student will be able to plan the horse keeping in a business, taking into account sustainable development and in interaction with the landscape, as well as the development of the rural area.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- plan and design a horse facility taking into account the horse's indoor environment and outdoor activities
- adapt operations to current regulations for animal protection, work environment and surrounding environment
- analyze and discuss different ways of keeping horses from a sustainability perspective.
Content
The course deals with horse behavior and requirements for the indoor environment and management to maintain good health and horse welfare. Regulations for animal welfare, work environment and the surrounding environment concerning horse operations and horse facilities are addressed. Planning of horse facilities and operations is studied with the horse in focus, but also with regard to people such as owners, grooms, students and customers. The course provides an understanding of how a horse facility is planned with regard to buildings and land use (e.g. paddocks and pasture). The course highlights how to consider various aspects when planning, such as location of buildings, logistics, storage for feed and litter, the use of technology for feeding and manure handling, and biosecurity.
