Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge in organizational theory through a focus on entrepreneurship and leadership. The course provides theoretical and practical understanding of leadership and entrepreneurship at individual, group and organizational level, as well as how leadership and entrepreneurship play a role in the development of a more sustainable society. The student will develop in-depth knowledge of concepts, theories and models that are used to describe and discuss how and why leadership and entrepreneurship influence and are influenced by sustainable development. The course will also deepen generic skills, including critical thinking, discussion, oral as well as written presentation and the ability to work together in a group.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• apply organizational theories to analyse leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability in small, medium-sized and/or large organisations
• analyse and critically discuss connections between entrepreneurship and leadership at individual, group and organizational level
• analyse and critically discuss the role of entrepreneurship and leadership in the development of a more sustainable society
• present academic work, both written and oral 
• discuss academic literature in speech and writing.

Content

Subject content:

The course provides an in-depth study of organizational theory through a focus on entrepreneurship and leadership. The course uses central concepts from organization theory to understand and analyse how entrepreneurship and leadership affect the establishment and renewal of organizations at individual, group and organizational level. In particular, entrepreneurship and leadership as process are considered, as well as the interaction between organizations and their environment in the development of a more sustainable society. The student develops an in-depth understanding of how organizations influence stakeholders (customers, suppliers, politicians, advocacy groups, international actors, etc.), and how stakeholders influence organisations. The course is conducted through lectures, guest lectures, seminars and group work as well as an individual PM that synthesizes the course content.

Critical thinking, oral and written presentation, and teamwork in group work

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved written assignments.
Approved group work.
Approved oral presentation.
Approved participation in compulsory components.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
