- 60 credits in animal science, of which 5 credits in biochemistry

Objectives

The general aim of the course is that the student through an understanding of the chemical composition of feed and the animal’s metabolism, should obtain understanding of the feeding and digestion for production and maintained health of different animal species.

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe commonly occurring feeds and their nutritional properties,
- account for different process technologies, methods for harvest and storage for animal and vegetable feeds as well as influencing factors for the nutritional and hygienic quality of the feed,
- describe basic preconditions for the nutritional needs as well as the nutrient metabolism of different animal species,
- describe and give proposal on appropriate feed materials to different animal species as well as understand the importance of the hygienic quality of the feed,
- account for the principles of optimisation of a diet and apply these practically,
- critically review scientific and popular literature concerning feeding of animals,
- present an analytical literature study based on research, orally and in writing.

Content

The course gives an overview over how nutrients in different feeds are metabolized and utilized in food producing animals, zoo animals as well as animals for sport and society. In lectures it is described thoroughly how the different animal species are fed. Furthermore, an understanding of methods for production and conservation of feed are given as well as how feed is fed, both through theoretical calculations and study visits at farms as well as at zoo. Exercises take place in ration optimization with and without computer-aid. A project work is carried out in groups of students from different programmes and where articles in the scientific press with relation to feed are reviewed scientifically and from a sustainability perspective.

Compulsory components occur in e.g. group work, presentations, group discussions, projects and study visits.

In the course, the following general skills are trained: Scientific communication as well as oral presentation

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed oral and written examination, passed project work as well as approved participation in compulsory components.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.

The course includes 6 credits in nutrition as well as 1.5 credits in feed science The course assumes good prior knowledge in the animals’ physiology as well as biochemistry.

Studenten redogör utförligt och korrekt för hur djurens behov och foderråvarornas näringsmässiga och hygieniska kvalitet kan kombineras, och ger samt diskuterar välgrundade förslag på hur olika djurgrupper kan fodras, vilka fodermedel som kan användas samt hur dessa ska skördas, lagras och processas innan utfodring.

Studenten diskuterar kring effekterna av olika lagrings- och processmetoder på fodermedels näringsmässiga och hygieniska kvalitet.

Studenten diskuterar kring olika djurgruppers behov av näringsämnen och hur detta påverkar val av foderråvaror samt foderstatens sammansättning.

Studenten identifierar vanligt förekommande fodermedelsråvaror.

Studenten beskriver vanligt förekommande vegetabiliska och animaliska fodermedel och deras viktigaste näringsmässiga egenskaper

Studenten redogör för viktiga process-tekniker, skörde- och lagringsmetoder samt hur de kan påverka fodrets hygieniska och näringsmässiga kvalitet

Studenten beskriver vanliga djurgruppers behov av makronäringsämnen samt grundläggande redogöra för hur dessa omsätts.

Studenten ger förslag på lämpliga foderråvaror till olika djurgrupper.

Studenten beräknar en foderstat samt optimerar en foderstat med hjälp av optimeringsprogram.

Studenten redogör översiktligt för principerna för foderstatsoptimering

Studenten kan hitta och granska relevant vetenskaplig och populärvetenskaplig litteratur för att besvara en frågeställning rörande utfodring av djur.

Studenten kan i grupp presentera en litteraturstudie.

Lärandemål

Studenten ska kunna:

- beskriva vanligt förekommande fodermedel och deras näringsmässiga egenskaper,

- redogöra för olika processtekniker, skörde- och lagringsmetoder för animaliska och vegetabiliska fodermedel, samt påverkande faktorer för fodrets näringsmässiga och hygieniska kvalitet,

- beskriva grundläggande förutsättningar för olika djurgruppers näringsbehov samt omsättning av näringsämnena,
- beskriva och ge förslag på lämpliga foderråvaror till olika djurgrupper samt förstå vikten av fodrets hygieniska kvalitet,

- redogöra för principerna för optimering av en foderstat och praktiskt tillämpa dessa,

- kritiskt granska vetenskaplig och populärvetenskaplig litteratur angående utfodring av djur,
- skriftligt och muntligt presentera en litteraturstudie med krav på analysförmåga och forskningsanknytning.
