Agricultural Science for rural development
Fördjupade kunskaper om lantbrukssektorn är en av pusselbitarna i arbetet med landsbygdsutveckling. Under kursen får du lära dig att:
- Översiktligt beskriva biologiska och ekologiska förutsättningar för växtodling, och hur dessa påverkar växtodlingen på olika platser samt hur olika åtgärder försöker överbrygga platsgivna begränsningar.
- Känna igen några viktiga kulturväxter, arbetsmoment, maskinbehov och deras eventuella miljöpåverkan, inom växtodling.
- Översiktligt beskriva grundläggande biologiska skillnader mellan olika viktiga husdjursslag i lantbruket, som påverkar vad de används till och vilka krav det ställer på utfodring och skötsel samt etiska aspekter på husdjurshållning.
- Översiktligt beskriva viktiga praktiker i animalieproduktionen.
- Översiktligt beskriva den svenska livsmedelsindustrin, samt internationella aktörer och livsmedelsmärkningar.
- Översiktligt känna till förädlingsprocesser och hygieniska aspekter i livsmedelsindustrin, och de krav som de ställer på lantbruksproduktion.
- Översiktligt redogöra för nationalekonomiskt tänkande samt företagsekonomiska perspektiv.

The course intends to provide the students in the agriculture rural development programme knowledge of and an understanding of the preconditions, functions of the agrarian sector, and its’ interaction with the rest of society. On completion of the course, the student should be able to: - Describe at a general level biological and ecological preconditions for plant cultivation, and how these influence the plant cultivation in different locations and how different measures try to bridge geographical limitations. - Recognise some important cultivated plants, tasks, needs for machinery and their possible environmental impact within plant cultivation. - Describe, at a general level, basic biological differences between different important production animals in agriculture that influences what they are used for and which requirements are set on feeding and maintenance and ethical aspects of animal husbandry. - Describe, at a general level, important practices in the animal husbandry. - Describe, at a general level, the Swedish food industry and international actors and food labels. - At a general level know industrial processes and hygienic aspects in the food industry and the requirements that they set on agriculture. - Account for economic thinking and business economic perspectives, with application to agricultural businesses, at a general level.
Content
At lectures, seminars, project work and possible study visits, the economics of the agriculture is treated, resources, methods including technology for production of goods and services (domestic animals, plants, foodstuffs), and these products’ processing, with a focus on Swedish conditions.

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
The aim of the course is examined through written tests, oral presentations and active approved participation in compulsory components.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Transitional provisions
• Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course. • Compulsory elements: At least one opportunity for a retake session must be offered within two years of the decision to cancel the course.Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
