Objectives

In this course you will get acquainted with different methods for describing and analyzing a district, its history and its future.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• with guidance, design a structural proposal for the green / blue infrastructure, public places or similar for a district;

• choose the appropriate analysis method and carry out and analyze an urban environment with regard to structure, function and experience;

• critically examine the municipality’s plans and guidelines regarding the future development of the exercise area;

• report the intended development of a structure over time;

• analyze the proposal on the basis of aesthetic, social and ecological aspects;

• orally and visually present their proposal so that the problem and concept are clearly stated;

• reflect on consequences for people and the environment.

Content

The course aims to familiarize students with different methods for describing and analyzing a district, its history and its future.

The assignment begins with the students conducting a case study that aims to understand the landscape and the district’s context, its history, its physical, social and ecological conditions. The module trains, among other things, document analysis, field inventory methodology. Students will work in project groups.

The case study is used as a basis for, with the help of scenario technology, developing various future development opportunities for the district. The next part of the exercise is performed in small groups. Students’ work with design and the development of different visions is stimulated through sketching exercises and inspirational lectures. Supervision in the studio is an important support in the individual’s own development. Great emphasis is placed on training the student’s ability to combine many different interests and aspects into a whole.

Methods to shed light on the consequences of the various descriptions of the future for the environment and people are discussed and tested.

The student must orally account for the development of the sketch process, which choices the student has made and which sources of inspiration have influenced the result. Attention is also paid to the sketch as a way of communicating.

The vision of the future and its consequences is reported so that the basic idea is clear from the chosen presentation technique and layout. The course includes teaching and training in using digital presentation techniques.

Passed exercises and participation in mandatory parts.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
