Biological systems of the landscape
On completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- explain and account for quaternary geological sediments and land forms in a landscape and how they have been formed
- explain the physical and chemical properties of different soil types and how these properties can be influenced by external factors
- describe basic ecological structures and processes in the rural landscape
- account for the basic morphology and physiology of plants
- classify plants with the help of a flora and acquired knowledge of morphology and systematics of the plants.

Nu finns schemat på plats!
Det är tre saker jag vill informera här om:
- Kursen kommer att ges till 100% på distans. Jag blev ombedd att göra detta enligt reglarna, där undantag bara ges när kursmålen inte kan nås. Det är inte fallet. Självklart är det beklagligt att situationen är fortfarande så att undervisning måste bedrivas i så stor omfattning på distans. Det som är bra är att vi har erfarenheten från i fjol samt att vi denna gång hade bättre tid att förbereda oss på detta.
- Inga föreläsningar (eller andra moment med live streaming) kommer att spelas in!!! Jag beklagar detta också. Man i SLUs anvisningar kring distansundervisning och GDPR står det att föreläsningar inte ska spelas in. Och jag kommer att följa denna regel som gäller vid SLU. Det är viktigt för er att känna till detta redan nu, så att ni vet vad som gäller. Powerpoint filer av föreläsningar kommer att göras tillgängliga.
- Vecka 16 är schemat inte helt spikat. Eventuellt kommer Urbans föreläsning flyttas till den 21/4 (i så fall på förmiddagen).

Välkomna till kursen ”Biologiska system i landskapet”!
Kursen startar den 24/3 kl 9.15. Listan över kurslitteraturen finns nu här på kurshemsidan. Schema kommer att finnas här senast fyra veckor innan kursstart. Jag kommer också snart att öppna Canvas sidan.
Vi planerar kursen för tre olika scenarier:
- Allt online
- Hybrid lösning (online + på plats)
- Allt på plats
Vi får se hur reglarna för undervisning kommer att se ut när kursen startar.
Har ni frågor kan ni gärna höra av er till mig via e-post, men just nu kan jag inte svara på i vilken form kursen kommer ges. Angående detta följer vi riktlinjerna som ges centralt vid SLU. Vi har kört kursen 100% online ifjol – så det har vi erfarenhet med, men jag hoppas att det kommer finnas möjlighet att ordna åtminstone vissa praktiska moment på plats.

Objectives
This course intends to give the students a basic idea of biological/natural geographical phenomena and systems, primarily in the rural landscape. The main subject areas of the course are geology, soil science, ecology, plant physiology and floristics.
On completion of the course, the students should be able to:

classify plants with the help of a flora and acquired knowledge of morphology and systematics of the plants.
Content
The course consists of these modules geology, soil science, ecology, plant physiology and floristics.
The geology part comprises basic knowledge about bedrock geology, quaternary deposits and development history. land formation and geomorphological processes.
The soil science module comprises physical, chemical and biological properties of natural soils. This knowledge provides the basics and the understanding that can be transferred to anthropogenic soil/plant systems. The structure and function of the pore system and the buffering system of the soil are important features of the course module.
The ecology module contains basic knowledge on ecosystems, biotopes, populations and interactions between organisms and the environment. Evolutionary and ecological processes (such as succession) are introduced. Aspects on landscape and climate changes in relation to biological diversity are included.
The plant physiology module includes water and nutrient uptake of plants, the hormone system of plants and plants’ reactions to stress.
The floristics (identification of wild plants) module is to a great extent based on field trips and plant identifications exercises, but also comprises theoretical aspects.
Basic ecological knowledge is assumed and ecological discussions are integrated continuously throughout most parts of the course.
The different parts of the course are integrated to some extent and are based on the landscape and its systems.
The course comprises lectures, exercises, seminars (some are compulsory), field trips (some are compulsory), group assignments and independent studies and examination (compulsory). Compulsory seminars, exercises and field trips are marked in timetable.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Passed written examinations.
Passed participation in compulsory course modules.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
