Studio Project - Advanced Planting Design

Design Project - Advanced Planting Design is a course directed at developing advanced design skills and knowledge about design and plants concerning gardens, parks, flowerbeds etc in different contexts.



Throughout the course, the concept of garden design and the role plant use and plant selection plays in that context is discussed. Emphasis is on the knowledge of plants and plant composition for well-designed garden settings and on garden design as a contemporary phenomenon and discourse. The course is addressing the integration of different values in plant design, such as aesthetics, history, ecology, recreation, maintenance, social and pedagogic values. Plant knowledge and design skills are developed through lectures, literature, seminars, study visits, design projects and written assignments. Students will be trained to use a wide range of plants in the design of gardens and parks to understand the possibilities and limitations of plants and to use plant design as a mean to fulfill the needs in various garden settings. Students will also be trained in reflecting upon the correlation between proposed designs and representations on the one hand and visions for garden character and development on the other hand. Trends and main features of garden design are discussed throughout the course.
