Objectives

The course intends to provide knowledge on various energy types and their environmental consequences while skills in written and oral presentation will be trained. On completion of the course the student should be able to:

• account for basic energy concepts;

• describe and reflect on the advantages and limitations of the techniques and systems for different energy types with special emphasis on renewable ones;

• evaluate different energy forms in relation to their environmental impact, particularly on their effects in air and water;

• describe and with own words reflect on the energy supply and use in society, particularly in relation to their environment and climatic consequences and

• document and present an in-depth project orally and in writing in the area of energy and environment.

Content

The course starts with an introduction to energy concepts and strategies connected to global and national environmental goals. The course comprises the following learning activities:

• lectures on techniques and systems for the utilization of different energy types (including bioenergy, solar, wind and hydroelectric power); resource requirements and availability for various types of energy (particularly wind, wave and solar ones); energy conversion and storing; nuclear power; and air pollutions and their effects on health and environment;

• laboratory work and calculation exercises related to energy conversion;

• study visits to several energy installations;

• an individual project work where each student analyses and reflects on an energy system in its relation to environment and climate issues. The work is presented orally and in writing as well as be discussed at a round table and

• examination through a written test as well as the project work.

The timetable activities include lectures, calculation exercises, laboratory work, supervision, project presentation, study visits, examination as well as course evaluation, while individual studies include literature studies and project work.

Compulsory components are the supervision classes, the presentation of the project work, the study visits as well as active participation in the oral presentations of the individual projects.

Grading form

The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.

Formats and requirements for examination

Approved written examination, passed project work as well as active participation in the compulsory parts of the course.

• If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.

• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.

• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.

• The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
