Researching Landscape Governance
The overall objective of this PhD course is to discuss and analyze different theories as well as suitable methodological approaches to the study of Landscape governance, which will feed into the PhD students’ own research projects. This is based on lectures, reading and discussions of contemporary literature. Further insights and inspiration from theories and methodologies will be coupled with examples from different research projects and practice. Inputs will be discussed and elaborated in relation to the PhD students’ own research.
First, the course will give an introduction to the context in which studies of landscape governance are relevant today. Secondly, it will provide an orientation on theories related to public governance approaches and global landscape governance perspectives. Third, the course will present and discuss methodological approaches related to the study of Landscape governance, mainly action research and living labs. Lastly, the course will engage the students in contemporary research approaches to studying landscape governance, including connections to their own projects.
The objectives will be met by critically reading, discussing and identifying relevant challenges while reflecting on contemporary academic perspectives on governance.
The course will invite PhD students from SLU, Sweden and other Nordic countries as well as internationally. PhD students at SLU Landscape and ongoing NordForsk funded research projects (NordGreen and SMARTer Greener Cities), and EU funded projects (CONEXUS with EU and Southern American perspectives and REGREEN with EU and Chinese perspectives) will be encouraged to participate.
The five day PhD course will build on a combination of own readings of relevant literature, lectures from leading academics and discussions, as well as essays reflecting the PhD students own work and relating it to the literature, lectures and discussions.

***Pedagogical form***
The course is planned to be held mainly as a physical workshop, but can even be held on-line should the circumstances require so.
The five-day program will be divided into lectures, presentations of students’ own work and reflections, discussions in plenum, as well as basis for developing individual essays to be handed in and assessed after the course.
***Networking activities for students***
Students will be able to meet and network via the scheduled 5-day program. Here, own presentations and related discussions will take place on a daily basis. Via the course, we will enable PhD students to form a network related to the topics of landscape governance, and with special emphasis on studying different methodological approaches.
***Student recrutiment***
Via the inclusion of ongoing research projects, including many participants, there is a firm basis to long- sighted collaborations, and network building for future academic developments. We expect a half of the students to be part of the ongoing research projects, and the other half to represent primarily NOVA universities, but also PhD students from e.g. NL and the UK. The course will be promoted primarily via the ongoing research projects mentioned above.
***Added value as a NOVA course***
By using the Nordic NOVA University platform, we build on the long tradition of enhancing Nordic cooperation. This has recently been strengthened by the recent NordForsk initiative of funding four larger research projects related to smart cities, human health, and green space planning and management. A renewed Nordic perspective have thus been applied to the Nordic research community, building on previous NOVA focus on Urban Forestry & Urban Greening.
