I kursen introduceras du till kraftfulla och allmängiltiga statistiska metoder, som regressions- och tidserieanalys. Dessutom lär du dig grunderna i att planera marknadsundersökningar, göra urval, sammanställa och utvärdera data.
Du tillämpar dina kunskaper i ett flertal projekt som pågår under hela kurstiden, där du både får planera en undersökning och analysera inhämtade data med hjälp av statistiska programpaket.

Basic requirements for Swedish university study and Ma C or the equivalent.Objectives
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in statistics with applications in economics and business and administration.After the course, the student should be able to:
- describe economical data in tables and graphs.
- apply basic statistical principles and probability concepts.
- calculate confidence intervals and perform hypothesis testing.
- explain the meaning of statistical error margin and statistical significance.
- analyse frequency data
- manage and interpret regression and time series models and to make forecasts.
- design a statistical study
- collect data through survey and compile the results in a report.
- use a statistical software package to analyse data.
Content
The course comprises lectures, exercise classes, two compulsory assignments and computer exercises.Part 1 (5 hp)
- descriptive statistics including diagrams, tables and measures of mean and variation.
- basic probability theory and discrete and continuous probability distributions.
- methods for control of statistical uncertainty, e.g. hypothesis testing and confidence intervals.
- analyse of frequency data.
Part 2 ( 5 hp)
- simple and multiple regression analyses.
- introduction to time series analysis.
Part 3 (3 hp)
- questionnaire survey, assignment.
Part 4 (2 hp)
- regression and time series analysis, assignment
Formats and requirements for examination
Part 1- passed written exam. The written exam will be graded U, 3, 4 or 5.
Part 2
- passed written exam. The written exam will be graded U, 3, 4 or 5.
Part 3
- passed oral and written presentation in at least one compulsory seminar. Opposition of another group’s work is also a part of the examination. The valid grades for the, written report, oral presentation, opposition, assignments and participation in seminars are (U) Fail or (G) Pass.
Part 4
- passed oral and written presentation in at least one compulsory seminar. The valid grades for the, written report, oral presentation, assignments and participation in seminars are (U) Fail or (G) Pass.
To pass the whole course, it’s required that all the exams and the compulsory parts are passed. The grade will be a summary assessment of the results of the examinations of all four parts. The final grade will be given after all the compulsory parts are passed.
- If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
- If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
- If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.
