Basic Statistics with Applications to Natural Sciences
Things we cannot control often affect what we observe, and this random variation is the basis of this course. How can we say that it will be warmer if there is annual variation in temperature? How can we say that one method of preventing virus infestation is better than another method if the spread of the virus is due to chance?
The course presents some of the practical statistical methods required to read and understand modern scientific research with a focus on natural sciences. The course takes you from the most basic statistical methods that you can calculate on your own to some of the more complicated statistical models used in research. What you learn will be useful when you are doing your bachelor or master thesis, but also if you are aiming for a future in research or a profession where you handle a lot of data.
The course provides a theoretical basis and philosophy that allows you to use statistical methods in practical work where different models are tested and discussed. During the course, the program R is used, which is also useful beyond statistics, for example for visual presentation, bioinformatics and GIS.

If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
