Energy systems for agricultural and horticultural enterprises


The course provides basic knowledge about the production, use and management of renewable energy carriers in order to achieve more sustainable energy systems within the agricultural and horticultural sectors:



  • basic energy concepts and basic thermodynamics

  • energy resources and energy use nationally and internationally

  • energy analysis, climate impact and other environmental effects

  • energy needs in buildings

  • energy management, energy saving measures and energy planning

  • production and use of solid, liquid and gaseous biofuels

  • combustion technologies, storage and distribution of heat

  • heat pumps, solar heating, etc.

  • production and use of biogas and digestate (as biofertiliser)

  • production of electricity from solar, wind, hydro and biomass conversion facilities

  • renewable fuels and other energy carriers for operating work machines

  • basic methods for estimating economic profitability and climate impact of energy investments

  • demand, market conditions and examples of business models for locally produced energy

  • system integration of energy solutions, e.g. electricity from solar cells and windpower stations in combination with energy storage in hydrogen systems, batteries, etc.


Applied law


The course gives legal knowledge applicable on rural enterprises. In the course legal issues are dealt with on the basis of legal rules, and partly problem-oriented with reality-based tasks:



  • the function of the legal rules for companies with emphasis on owner-led companies, basic method and problem solving in agreements and disputes,

  • basic legal systems, the relationship of EU law to Swedish law,

  • basic marital law/cohabitant law and inheritance law,

  • basic contractual law, purchase-based including distance contracts and international purchasing, marketing, common standard contracts in green industry including credit standard agreements,

  • basic association law with emphasis on owner-led liability companies,

  • basic labour legislative questions in owner-led companies in the green industry,

  • basic real-estate law including purchase, lease, administration, pledge, property regulation, etc.


The course uses different teaching methods to promote the students learning and discussions through:


Lectures, exercises, tasks, study visits, project work, seminars/presentations.


The course focuses on following general competencies


Problem solving, oral communication, written communication, plan and manage time.


The following components are compulsory:


Study visits


Collaboration with the surrounding community takes place through study visits and guest lecturer’s active in the area.
