Animal welfare, legislation and epizootiology

This course provides a general introduction to the topics animal welfare, epizootology/epidemiology and food safety, including relevant national and international legislation. The course covers the layout and design of legislation, i.e. an introduction to the legal system which governs veterinary activities in Sweden. Furthermore, an overview of the principles for official animal welfare control, disease control and food hygiene control is given. Current issues in animal welfare and ethics are brought up, as is a scientific approach to animal welfare risks. The writing of correct and legally valid veterinary certificates is discussed. The training in epizootologi is focused on current legislation, principles of disease control and the formal definition of freedom from disease, including preventive measures, biosecurity and control of zoonotic diseases. Food hygiene and feed and food control, and the work carried out by central and regional authorities in relation to food issues from a veterinary perspective are also included.
