Chloë Raderschall

Chloë Raderschall
I am a PhD student in the Agricultural Entomology unit studying the ecology of crop protection and pollination in faba beans (Vicia faba).

Research

I study the effects of diversified farming systems at both landscape scale (landscape crop diversity) and field scale (supplementation of wildflower strips and honeybee hives), on ecosystem services such as natural pest control and pollination in faba beans in southern Sweden. For this project I work together with Riccardo Bommarco and Ola Lundin from SLU as well as Hushållningssällskapet in Skåne.

For my last field season I studied how ecosystem services interact under extreme weather events. Specifically, we tested how drought and herbivory affect pollination and yield in faba beans. For this project I worked together with Ola Lundin, Riccardo Bommarco, Giulia Vico and Astrid Taylor.

Background

I obtained tertiary education in both environmental sciences and biology from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia. During my Masters I studied the relationship between the navigational strategies of diurnal and nocturnal bull ants and their visual systems by combining behavioural work with anatomical and neuroanatomical techniques and microscopy. For fieldwork, I employed a novel insect tracking method using differential GPS as well as high-resolution filming.

Following my Masters I did an internship at the at the Swiss Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) in Frick, where I was involved in 1) testing biological regulation measures against the spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) 2) assisting the development of a biological repellent made from essential oils against pollen beetles in oilseed rape and 3) assessing the use of wildflower strips in organic apple orchards to promote natural pest control.
