Introduction course – Crop production
The course contains lectures, exercises, study visits and excursions that treat:
biological natural resources, their occurrence and how they are used to generate goods and employments, with focus on agriculture and annual cycles
prerequisites for cultivation in agriculture, overview of historical development regarding the use of plant material and possible future development
species knowledge of crops and weeds
introduction to environmental ethics, sustainable use of natural resources and agricultural and rural history
general library science and study technique
The course also includes an essay including oral and written presentation
On excursions and study visits, natural environments are visited to increase the knowledge of the use and the administration of natural resources in Sweden as well as preconditions for agricultural practices. Compulsory components are excursions, study visits and exercises.

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to the education and an insight in the future profession. This is achieved by giving the student a general introduction to the use of natural resources and the importance of crop production in society. In collaboration with students from other agricultural bachelor programmes, the student gets an insight and understanding for other parts of the agricultural food system and their importance in different parts of society. Furthermore, the course aims to introduce the student to higher education and give training in written and oral presentation.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- describe at a general level the use of natural resources, with focus on agriculture
-show a basic understanding for the different parts of the agricultural food system and their importance in society
describe at a general level the crop production, its importance for the cultural landscape and the environment as well as its historical development
identify certain species of crops and weeds
search, critically review and discuss scientific literature in speech and writing.
-discuss the use of natural resources from an ethical perspective

If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

Boken finns att låna på SLU-biblioteket om ni inte vill köpa den redan nu inför kommande kurser. Boken kostar ca 600 kr.
Boken används även som kursbok på kommande kurser under utbildningen (Fältkurs i växtproduktion 7,5 hp, vårterminen årskurs 1 och Växtproduktion – mark och grödor 15 hp och Växtproduktion – ogräs och växtskadegörare 15 hp, höstterminen i årskurs 3).

Litteratur Matematik
Matematik ingår formellt inte i introduktionskursen, men under kursens gång erbjuds möjlighet att repetera gymnasiematematik som behövs för senare delar av programmet. I början av kursen görs också ett diagnostiskt test. Du uppmanas starkt att delta i de moment som erbjuds för att ha lättare att klara av kommande kurser.
Matematikbok för gymnasiet. Använd förslagsvis den litteratur du själv har haft på gymnasiet. Ett alternativ för de som inte har någon bok från gymnasiet är Andrejs Dunkels, Bengt Klefsjö, Nilsson I, Näslund R., 2002. Mot bättre vetande i matematik (ca 300 kr i handeln). Den finns i några exemplar på SLU-biblioteket. Du kan också hitta matteteori på nätet.
