The course intends to give the participants an overview of questions in environmental and animal ethics with special focus on their relevance in agriculture and forestry. On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Account for central problems in environment and animal ethics
- Describe central concepts and theories in the environmental ethics and animal ethics
- Reflect on and analyse the strengths, weaknesses and problems of these concepts and theories
- Discuss environmental and animal ethics problems in particular in relation to agriculture and forestry
- Formulate one’s own position on a problem in environmental or animal ethics and argue for said position


- During the course, questions are discussed against the background of different ethical outlooks and in the context of SLU’s area of activity This context is clarified by means of guest lectures or study visits. In the course, the ability to conduct critical discussion is also trained, for example through seminars and written exercises.

- Environment and animal ethics concern questions about how humans should relate to nature and animals. This course covers central concepts for the discussion about human stewardship and sustainable use of biological natural resources. Examples of such questions are: Do nature or ecosystems have intrinsic value? Do animals have rights, and if so, how can they be interpreted? Is it ethically acceptable to raise animals for meat production? Can giving up great environmental value for economic gain be justified? Is it morally right to patent crops in developing countries? Do we have duties to future generations? A perspective from the history of ideas on the environmental and animal ethics debate is also introduced.

Formats and requirements for examination

Passed written examination, passed active participation in seminars with completed preparatory assignments. Compulsory components: Seminars including written preparatory assignments.
  • If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so.
  • If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment.
  • If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course.
  • For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline. For more information on this, please refer to the regulations for education at Bachelor's and Master's level.

3: Studenten redogör för några centrala problem i miljö- och djuretiken. Studenten kan beskriva huvuddragen i några viktiga miljö- och djuretiska teorier och karaktärisera några ingående begrepp. Studenten kan ange några för- och nackdelar för viktiga miljö- och djuretiska teorier. Studenten visar medvetenhet om problem (t.ex. vaghet) hos några ingående begrepp. Studenten diskuterar konkreta miljöetiska problem som presenterats under kursen och använder argument från kurslitteraturen, även i relation till jord- och skogsbruk Studenten presenterar sin ståndpunkt i en konkret miljö- eller djuretisk fråga och ger argument för den.

4: Studenten kan utförligt beskriva huvuddragen i några viktiga miljö- och djuretiska teorier. Studenten använder begreppen väsentligen korrekt. Studenten kan diskutera centrala för- och nackdelar för flera viktiga miljö- och djuretiska teorier. Studenten kan resonera kring definitioner och relevans av de ingående begreppen. . Studenten visar god förmåga att föra självständiga resonemang. Studenten visar förmåga att använda argumenten även på andra miljö- och djuretiska problem än de presenterade, särskilt i relation till jord- och skogsbruk. Studenten ger goda argument för sin ståndpunkt, anger möjliga motargument och bemöter dem.

5: Studenten kan utförligt beskriva huvuddragen i flera viktiga miljö- och djuretiska teorier. Studenten använder begreppen korrekt, konsekvent och med precision. Studenten kan konstruktivt och analytiskt relatera miljö- och djuretiska teorier och begrepp till varandra samt föreslå förändringar i miljö- och djuretiska teorier och begrepp mot bakgrund av styrkor och svagheter. Studenten kan konstruktivt analysera problem ur kurslitteraturen,resonera självständigt, och kan använda andra vetenskapliga texter för att styrka argumentationen särskilt i relation till jord- och skogsbruk. Studenten anger och bemöter utförligt möjliga motargument. Studenten resonerar kring konsekvenserna av ståndpunkten även med hjälp av hypotetiska exempel.
