Microeconomics and its Applications in Agricultural and Environmental Economics

The student account
You will need your student account to access e.g. your e-mail, Ladok and Canvas. For information regarding how to create your student account, see here: https://student.slu.se/en/study-support/it-support/support/new-student---start/
Registration for the course
Self-registration for the course is done in Ladok between 2021-01-01 and 2021-01-17. Remember that you must be admitted and registered in Ladok to be able take the course. Having access to Canvas does not mean you are registered in the course and without registration, you are risking losing your place in the course.
If you have been admitted to the course with conditions, you need to send your credit list to the course leader who will review it and decide if you can register. Do this as soon as possible as reviewing credits may take a few days due to the course start.
Educational support
If you are entitled extra educational support, please inform the course leader at the start of the course so that special arrangements can be made.
For educational support for an exam, see instructions in the exam registration in Ladok Student. You need to register for alternative exam arrangements no later than 15 workings days prior to the examination day. More information here: https://student.slu.se/en/study-support/study-support/funka/.
Discontinuation of a course
If you want to discontinue the course, you should immediately notify the educational administrators at econ-edu@slu.se, who in turn will inform the course leader and register a non-completion of the course in Ladok after your approval. You are also able to register an early non-completion of the course (within three weeks after course start) in Ladok yourself.
Exams
You need to register for exams in Ladok, the registration closes 10 workings days prior to the exam. You can find your anonymity code in Ladok Student. It's not possible to register for the exam after the deadline has passed.
Corrected exams can usually be collected Wednesdays at 12.30 - 14.30 in room D416 or D417 in Ulls Hus. Due to Covid, it is best to contact econ-edu@slu.se to get help with collecting your exam.

The goal of the course is to give students a more profound understanding of economic theory, and to provide students with an understanding of alternative methods for analysing specific policy problems of high current relevance within agricultural and environmental economics.
With successful completion of this course, students will have theoretical microeconomic knowledge and empirical analysis ability.
After successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
analyze how market supply and demand arise from firm and consumer decisions, and what lies behind these decisions
analyze duality in microeconomics
derive and interpret the Slutzky equation
analyse policy dilemmas from a welfare perspective, in partial and general equilibrium;
analyse market power in product and factor markets
account for alternative methods for ex-ante and ex-post analysis of policy problems
describe and identify central themes in agricultural and environmental economics
critically evaluate the usefulness of alternative methods for analysing policy targets and economic instruments
use economic theory to describe economic decisions on agricultural and environmental policy

Passed project report.
Participation in obligatory seminars and exercises.
If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.

Grading criteria
To obtain grade 3, the student should be able to:
- analyze how market supply and demand arise from firm and consumer decisions, and what lies behind these decisions,
- analyze duality in microeconomics,
- derive and interpret the Slutzky equation
- analyse policy dilemmas from a welfare perspective, in partial and general equilibrium;
- analyse market power in product and factor markets
- account for alternative methods for ex-ante and ex-post analysis of policy problems
- describe and identify central themes in agricultural and environmental economics
- critically evaluate the usefulness of alternative methods for analysing policy targets and economic instruments
- use economic theory to describe economic decisions on agricultural and environmental policy
To obtain grade 4 the students should be able to demonstrate good knowledge and skills in relation to the requirements for grade 3.
To obtain grade 5 the students should be able to demonstrate very good knowledge and skills in relation to the requirements for grade 3.
A grade U (fail) will be obtained if the student does not fullfil one or more of the criteria for grade 3 and/ or has not completed the requirements stipulated under i) and ii) below.
Requirements for passing the course
In order for the student to fulfil the requirements of the course she/he has to:
i) Write a research proposal satisfying the requirements for a passing grade. The research proposal is graded pass or fail.
ii) Attend and actively participate in the application part of the course consisting of 7 compulsory lectures and seminars. This includes presenting and defending the written research proposal at the final seminar as well as being an active discussant on another student's proposal. Graded pass or fail.
iii) Fullfil the requirements for at least a grade 3 at the written exam. Exams are graded 3, 4, 5, or fail. Note that grades 4 and 5 can only be obtained at the first regular exam and the first re-exam.
The final grade in the course is determined as follows
Grade 3 - passing grade on i), a passing grade on ii) and a grade 3 on the written exam (iii).
Grade 4 - passing grade on i), a passing grade on ii) and a grade 4 on the written exam (iii).
Grade 5 - passing grade on i), a passing grade on ii) and a grade 5 on the written exam (iii).
