Forestry sustainability analysis

One example of forest sustainability analysis is to develop a sustainability plan for a given landscape. Today, such work includes consideration to economic, ecological and social values. It also means taking into account the people behind these values. In addition to demands about economic returns, there could be expectations for maintenance of biodiversity, amenity values, cultural heritage and opportunities to use the land for various recreational activities. These different objectives are often in conflict with one another and therefore we must evaluate the consequences of different alternatives to find good compromise solutions

In this course, which is largely based on a project work, you will gain insights and skills in making a sustainability plan for a landscape. This includes gap analysis of the current forest state, establishing objectives for sustainable forest use, identification of measurable objectives that can be used to operationalize the main objectives in the plan, creation of alternative plans with different compromises between the objectives, evaluation of the alternatives based on objectives as well as description off and arguments for alternative plans.
