Pomology - harvest, post harvest and plant breeding

This course targets those who want to learn more about fruit cultivation in Sweden, with a focus on cultivar identification, harvest, storage, market and plant breeding.

Fruit cultivation is important from a Swedish horticultural perspective and deeply rooted in our cultural history. During this course, you will get an introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of fruit cultivation in Sweden. You will learn how to identify different fruit cultivars and how the development of cultivars is performed, as well as how fruit quality and nutritional content affect consumption and product processing. We will also discuss various factors that affect the quality of the fruit at harvest and during storage.

The subject of pomology is divided into two courses, one of which takes place in the autumn and the other in the spring. The idea is that you will be able to follow the value chain for Swedish-produced fruit during one year. However, the courses can be taken in an independent order. Both courses comprise online lectures and exercises.
