Language
SwedishPrior knowledge
Courses corresponding to 90 credits within the Landscape Engineer Programme or the Landscape Architect Programme, of which at least 5 credits basic knowledge within landscape construction and design. Objectives
The objectives of the course are to understand, analyze and evaluate the aesthetic, technical and economic conditions of various construction materials from a user perspective.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
explain the architectural possibilities and limitations of various construction materials
describe how the characteristics of these materials are affected by manufacturing, subsequent handling and construction
explain the durability and lifetime of different combinations of materials in different environments
draw up basic plans through their understanding of the construction characteristics of various materials
recognise the environmental and economic consequences of different solutions in the short and long term
design and present construction drawings with the use of computer-based programme.
Content
The course comprises different material themes where natural stone, concrete, clay and metal are dealt with in detail. In addition, glass, plastic, rubber and ceramic materials are briefly reviewed.
The course provides training in observing the characteristics of materials, how these vary with handing and in conjunction with other materials, and how this can be expressed in a proposed construction. Through workshops, students will be given the opportunity to work with the materials in order to better learn their characters and properties. In this connection knowledge in the CAD-programme will be developed.
Visits will be made to workplaces with the aim of studying how the materials are made and handled and of reflecting on the possibilities and limitations of these manufacturing and handling methods. In addition, the environmental impact and maintenance requirements of each material will be studied.
The course deals with different forms of protective treatment for construction materials and the demands placed on these. Dimensioning, safety principles and constructive design of details, points of intersection and fastenings are also included in the course.
The course also contains a project component where one or more of the materials referred to above is dealt with in more detail in an individual task. This work is mainly performed using a CAD-programme.
Excursions and seminars are mandatory.
Grading form
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.Formats and requirements for examination
Assessment and pass grade in individual tasks specified at the start of the course, plus participation in compulsory workshops/seminars.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
Transitional provisions
• Exams: At least three retake sessions (renewed exams) will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course. • Compulsory components: At least one opportunity for a retake session will be offered within two years of the decision to discontinue the course.Other information
The right to participate in teaching and/or supervision only applies for the course instance the student was admitted to and registered on.
If there are special reasons, students are entitled to participate in components with compulsory attendance when the course is given again. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
