‘Citizen science’ is an umbrella term for increasingly popular forms of research where the research process and its outcomes are dependent on contributions from volunteers, meaning that the roles of ‘researcher’ and ‘research subject’ are blurred. This raises specific issues of research ethics, for instance concerning responsibility, credit, and authorship, and it might also have legal repercussions, such as in the context of ethical review or copyright.
