Magnus Karlsson is professor of plant pathology since 1 September 2022. His inauguration lecture will be held in Swedish and has the title "Förhållandet mellan växter och mikroorganismer: It’s complicated!".

Magnus Karlsson researches how plant diseases arise and spread and what we can do to minimise crop losses and increase food production. By studying interactions between plants and microorganisms at a molecular level, he tries to understand what is behind pathogenic microorganisms’ ability to cause disease, and what enables certain plants to defend themselves. This knowledge can be applied to plant breeding. Karlsson also works with biological control, where beneficial fungi are used to combat harmful microorganisms.
