Pia Geranmayeh (Kynkäänniemi)

Pia Geranmayeh
My main research is on nutrient retention in constructed wetlands treating agricultural runoff, with a focus on how design and placement can be optimised to also increase other ecosystem services without increased GHG emissions.

Presentation

I have a PhD in soil science with focus on water quality management. I evaluate measures to mitigate nutrient losses from agricultural land to waters. Specifically my research is focusing on how good design and placement of constructed wetlands increase their efficiency in trapping nutrients lost from fields. Besides wetland water quality and sediment, the upstream catchments are studied. We also deleope tools that will help implementation of cost-efficient wetlands and creation of a multifunctional wetlandscape. In addition I assess the wetland governance and financial systems.

This is a Swedish film about wetlands for reducing phosphorus; how, where and why to construct them. An English subtitle will be uploaded soon.

Evaluation av wetlands financed by LOVA-grants cost-effieciency (SwaM) 2022-2023

Over >130 wetlands financed with LOVA-grants will be assessed by gather information on placement , design and construction cost. We will produce a nitrogen load map for the south of Sweden and use it and a previous map for phosphorus to estimate the wetlands potential nutrient retention and cost-efficency. This method can then be used for evaluation of future wetlands as well.

Nutrient and particle capturing performance in P-wetlands: what factors influence the efficency? (Swedish Board of Agriculture FoU) 2022

Internal loading & recycling of phosphorus in wetlands (SwaM) 2018-2021

By collecting sediment samples from 40 constructed wetlands in agricultural areas the knowledge of internalloading in wetlands will be increased. Can the internal loading be reduced be specific wetland design or placement?

Advisory tool for optimal size and placement of wetlands (Swedish Board of Agriculture) 2019-2021

Measurements of nutrient retention will be related to nutrient load and hydraulic load. By moddeling these factors and producing maps covering southern Sweden (90% of the agricultural land), advisors can get help to identify places with high phosphorus load that will increase the potential retention. Furthermore, optimal size for the specific location will also be recommended.

PUDDLE JUMP: Promoting Upstream-Downstream Directed Linkages in the Environment: “Joined-Up” Management Perspectives (Formas) 2022-2026

We will highlight the need to consider upstream/downstream hydrological and institutional connectivity when evaluating the (dis-)benefits SAWs offer to society and nature. Through an in-depth and co-created study of Mälardalen (Uppsala and Enköping) urban and rural SAWs, we develop guidelines for Swedish municipal stakeholders to integrate SAWs into their planning processes. Citizen science will be used to increase public awareness of the multiple ES that SAWs provide.

WetKit Hydro-ES: Wetland Toolkit for Hydrological Ecosystem Services (Swedish EPA) 2020-2023

The overall goal of this project is to provide practitioners, land owners, water managers and relevant authorities with a toolkit to evaluate and promote the implementation of wetlands in agricultural landscapes. This toolkit will support a holistic and multi-functional approach to climate adaptation in line with existing socio-economic and institutional contexts by optimizing the delivery of hydrologically related ecosystem services (ES) with a view to maximizing co-benefits whilst minimizing negative consequences.
