A beneficiary and champion of the AgriFoSe2030 programme, Simon Shomkegh has been promoted to the rank of Professor of natural resource management in Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria.

His promotion was announced by the Senate of the University 2 September 2021, with effect from 1 October 2019. Professor Shomkegh attended one of the AgriFoSe2030 short courses on translating science into policy and practice in January 2017.

The focus of the training was to engage young agricultural researchers from sub-Saharan Africa on synthesis and communication of research results for policy impact and improved practices. In a quest to apply the skills gained from the training, professor Shomkegh got another unique opportunity on the AgriFoSe2030 programme to contribut e a chapter to the book Multifunctional land uses in Africa: Sustainable food security solutions, edited by Elisabeth Simelton and Madelene Ostward and first published in 2019. His chapter in the book titled; Nigerian climate-smart agriculture practices with scaling potential was one the publications assessed towards his promotion. The professor appreciates the AgriFoSe2030 programme for the opportunity to gain these innovative scientific writing skills.

“I also appreciate Madelene Ostward for her effective facilitation and coordination of the training course and the book publication project. In addition, Elisabeth Simelton and a host of other reviewers did a great job in strengthening our skills for effective communication of our research results during the book project.” said professor Simon Shomkegh.

The Academic Staff Union of the university in Nigeria organised a Professorial Honours Day to specially recognise and honour those promoted to the rank of professor. The AgriFoSe2030 champion and others promoted were decorated and urged to give their best in their various areas of specialisation. Professor Shomkegh now heads the Department of Social and Environmental Forestry at the university and supports the World Bank supported Center of Innovation in Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (CIPESS) as Monitoring and Evaluation Officer in the university.

The AgriFoSe2030 programme warmly congratulate professor Simon Shomkegh for his promotion, and wishes him the best of luck for the future!
