SLU Stable Isotope Lab (SSIL) and Biogeochemical Analysis Laboratory

The SSIL Lab

The SLU Stable Isotope Laboratory (SSIL) is located at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå, Sweden.

SSIL aims to become a core facility for developing and maintaining state-of-the-art stable isotope analyses of soils, plants, animal tissues, as well as gas and water samples.

SSIL currently houses 4 isotope-ratio mass spectrometers and 2 cavity ring-down spectrometers. We also have a wide range of supporting analytical and sample preparation equipment for water, soil, gas, plant, and tissue samples.

The laboratory has been analyzing stable isotopes for more than 15 years, but was formally established as an infrastructure in 2016 with funds from The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and from the Kempe Foundation.

SSIL is associated to the following laboratories and research infrastructures:

Mercury Analysis at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management

SLU Stable Isotope Laboratory, SSIL, provides analyses for stable isotopes of several light elements for researchers at both Swedish and international universities, as well as for the private sector. While our main focus is on stable isotopes, we also offer several related services, such as sample preparation and concentration analyses of i.e. sugars, organic acids, greenhouse gases, DIC and DOC.
