Joris Cromsigt, Senior lecturer at SLU, the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies, was recently appointed as Honorary Professor at Nelson Mandela University (NMU), Port Elizabeth South Africa. – I feel honoured by this appointment at one of Africa's leading universities, says Cromsigt.

Since 2012 Joris Cromsigt has been a Research Associate to the Nelson Mandela University. In the original appointment letter the university recognises the contributions Joris Cromsigt has made to the teaching and research activities. And most importantly he's building bridges; "Prof. Cromsigt also played a central role in developing a strong research-based collaboration between Nelson Mandela University and SLU, since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between our institutions in 2012".

At the heart of the collaboration were several projects with the Centre for African Conservation Ecology, led by Prof. Graham Kerley, which included the joint supervision of multiple South African and Swedish PhD and MSc students and postdoctoral researchers and the organization of several PhD summer schools.

Through this new appointment, NMU emphasizes the wish to broaden and deepen the relation with SLU. More specifically, it has asked Prof. Cromsigt to explore how both institutions can join forces in the field of sustainable use of terrestrial as well as aquatic natural resources. This fits well with the vision of both universities to generate cutting-edge knowledge for a sustainable future.

– I look forward to use this opportunity to strengthen the knowledge exchange between the global south and north, says Joris Cromsigt.
