Damage caused by insects

Dry and warm weather favors certain insects that can kill large volumes of forest. New insects that come to Sweden can have devastating consequences. What are we doing to save the forest? Here, you find new research from SLU on this topic.

New weapons against pine weevil

The attraction of the clear cut is so strong that a single hectare may give rise to 100 000 new pine weevils within two years. Hormonal treatment at the nurseries can be an effective tool against this weevil.

SLU Risk assessment of plant pests

This unit performs independent analyses which will provide support to the Swedish Board of Agriculture in their effort to counter the damage of non-indigenous pests such as insects and fungi.

Spruce bark beetle

An increase attacks on growing forest by spruce bark beetle was seen after the severe storms in 2005 and 2007. A large number of wind felled spruce trees were left in the forest, and the population of spruce bark beetle rapidly increased.
