At the Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre we develop new knowledge on sustainable forest practice in temperate and boreal forests through multidisciplinary research and education. We collaborate with stakeholders with a broad interest in forest-related questions.

The work is conducted in close cooperation with SLU's experimental forests, primarily Asa Experimental Forest and Research station and Tönnersjöheden experimental forest.

We have around 70 employees, of which 90 % work with research and education.

Background

The forest research in Alnarp was established in 1988 through a collaboration between the forest industry and SLU. The main reason for the establishment was the lack of forest research and higher forestry education in southern Sweden. In the beginning, the focus of the research was on developing knowledge about forestry for increased and sustainable biomass production in southern Sweden.

Following the establishment of the department in 1996, the research and education got a broader focus. Today, there are four research groups at the department that work with

  • silviculture and forest production
  • conservation ecology and forest history
  • forest planning and forest policy and
  • forest pathology.

Vision and mission

We want to contribute to:

  • our students getting unique competences in forest science
  • the forest sector’s abilities to improve forest practice at regional, national and international levels
  • applied science having a positive impact on our environment, society and economy

In addition, we aspire to reach an excellent work and study environment that provides development opportunities, safeguards highly competent human capital and is an attractive workplace.
