Effect of chicken manure surveyed

Published: 12 January 2011

Sofia Delin at SLU has found that the fertilization effect of total nitrogen in manure from hens or chickens is 30-40 per cent of the fertilizing effect of total nitrogen in fertilizers.

These studies suggest that both spreading in the late winter or in connection with spring farming operations is early enough for the nitrogen to be available for spring crops. Research also shows that one cannot base fertilizer recommendations on the ammonia content as one does with many other manure types. The nitrogen effect must be calculated on the total content of nitrogen.

The research project "Nitrogen mineralization patterns and impact on the crop after fertilization with poultry manure" is funded by the Swedish Farmers’ Foundation for Agricultural Research.
