EU project on health and welfare of organic laying hens

Published: 13 December 2011

Healthyhen is a new three-year European collaboration project on health and welfare of organic poultry. The project will collect data from organic laying hens in eight countries: Belgium, Holland, UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Denmark and Sweden.

The project aims to develop measures and advice for improving the health and welfare of the hens. In order to do this, risk factors in management and environment at the different farms shall be identified. Among other things, the occurence of feather pecking, foot injuries, curved breastbones and parasites will be studied. The project is the first in which information about organic laying hens in the European countries will be collected. The Swedish part of the project financed by the research council Formas.
