Fertilizing with mulching in the spring can reduce phosphorus leakage

Published: 26 May 2014

The risk of phosphorus leakage from manure is partly due to soil type, choice of crop and timing. Farmers can minimize the risk by having a long-term perspective on manure management, fertilize in spring and mulch the manure, especially on clay soils.

In their latest newsletter the Swedish Farmers' Foundation for Agricultural Research writes about the project ”Methods for reduced P leaching and increased nutrient use efficiency in crop rotations with applications of liquid manure”. Helena Aronsson at SLU was responsible for the three-year project.
