The Swedish Biodiversity Centre (CBM) is located to the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) campus Ultuna in Uppsala. CBM is administratively an institution within the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agriculture (NJ) at SLU and SLU and Uppsala University jointly control the CBMs activities. Both Universities allocate basic resources for CBM operation.

CBM's mandate is described in an agreement between the principals at Uppsala University and SLU (the last in 2011). CBM has a steering committee consisting of representatives of CBM's two principals, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agriculture (NJ) at SLU.

The operation of the CBM is led by a Director.
