The world’s largest conference for sustainable urban development – World Urban Forum (WUF10) took place in early February 2020 in the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi. The convener of the World Urban Forum is UN-Habitat, who organised the conference for the tenth time. SLU arranged two successful panel discussions and strengthened SLU’s position on the urban agenda.

The World Urban Forum addresses one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. SLU's participation 2020 was supported by SLU Global and led by Zeinab Tag-Eldeen, Researcher at the Department of Urban and Rural Development, and coordinator of the Research Platform Sparking Research into Global Transformation.

SLU Urban Futures Programme Director Lisa Diedrich moderated the panel discussion 'Beyond informality: Informal settlements as contemporary urban heritage'. The platform also invited Australian landscape architect and professor Julian Raxworthy, currently resident in the United Arab Emirates, to monitor and report from the forum.
