Hemp for fuel, fibre and oil

Last changed: 27 February 2012

Hemp is a cultivated plant grown for production of fibres, principally for textiles, sails and different kinds of rope. During some periods in the past, hemp has been a crop of great economic significance. Today hemp is often used for energy purposes.

The objective of this project was to produce a handbook describing the cultivation and harvest of hemp for different fields of application, e.g. as fibre, energy and seed. The preparation and use of hemp fibre, the harvesting of energy hemp and the use of hemp oil are reported in detail. The report concludes with some cost estimate examples.

The project was carried out in 2006 under the direction of SERO (Swedish Renewable Energies Association).
