Horses

Our research focus on horse feeding and nutrition and its' relation to health, welfare and performance. As horses are adapted to a grass based diet, forage is the most important feedstuff in an equine feed ration. Therefore, forage and its role in equine feed rations is a main research area for us, including e.g. nutritive and hygienic quality, impact of different forage types on eating behaviour and digestion as well as how nutritional and management factors influence equine health. Climate changes and an unstable security situation in the world challenges the market of inorganic fertilizers and animal feeds, and mobilisation of research and development is required to find more sustainable (preferably locally produced) feeds for all animals including horses.
Reed as feed to horses and ruminants
This project investigates whether reed silage can be used as roughage for horses. Reed is harvested in different plant maturations and analyzed with regard to energy value and nutrient content.
Carbohydrates in grass and forages for horses - The good, the bad and the ugly
The aim of this project is to investigate the content of the different carbohydrate fractions in different grass species and to study their digestion in the equine gastrointestinal tract.
