Visualising the future - with Dagmar Haase (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin) and Ludwig Bengtsson Sonesson (Lund university)

seminars, workshops |

Futures Lab webinar and discussion with Dagmar Haase (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin) and Ludwig Bengtsson Sonesson (Lund university)

Dagmar Haase will in her talk titled Future climate change action for urban forests and trees: When a solution becomes a challenge?! introduce the global problem of urban tree and forest mortality under climate as one feature of how the future climate will change the face and environment of our cities. She will discuss detection of damages, ways of an integrated monitoring, examples of citizen science and remote sensing both to support urban planning and land governance to cope with this major problem and, last but not least, what we can learn about the future of our social-ecological-technological systems under a changing climate.

Ludwig Bengtsson Sonesson will talk about Imaginaries as a way of structuring present day decision-making and investments. These narratives of the future are often absorbed and internalised without critical reflection—this talk explores how we can use artistic methods to create new imaginaries, critique dominant storylines and (hopefully) move towards societal transformation.

This webinar is part of a series, arranged by the Futures Lab at SLU which is a forum for interdisciplinary explorations of future research questions and societal challenges. The main target audiences are SLU researchers, teachers and students, but anyone interested is welcome to join. Find information and documentation from past webinars in the series here.

Host, moderator and speakers

Annsofie Wahlström, programme manager at SLU Future Food, host.

David Ljungberg, researcher at the Department of Energy and Technology, SLU, moderator.

Dagmar Haase is Professor in Landscape Ecology Urban Ecology at the Geography Department, Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, and a Guest Scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, UFZ, Leipzig, Germany. Her core expertise is in first, modelling urban land use change and urban system dynamics and urban telecouplings. Second, Dagmar's focus is on the quantification and assessment of ecosystem services and landscape functions using field methods, statistics and earth observation data. Third, Dagmar is highly interested and involved in green infrastructure perception studies using methods of citizen science.

Ludwig Bengtsson Sonesson has, as part of the Climaginaries collective at Lund University, created immersive explorations of the future such as the soundwalks Farewell Falsterbo and Memories from the transition, the museum exhibit Carbon Ruins and three fictitious travel guides to decarbonized futures. He is currently employed at the department of political science at Lund university.
