Production, fractionation and characterization of biomass from grassland for energy and raw material

We will develop systems for cropping, processing and characterisation of biomass from grass intercropped with legumes for different purposes. We will focus on harvest of green biomass that has been fertilized with biosolids. Fractionation of the biomass both with field based equipment and in a lab pilot will be evaluated as feedstock for both energy (biogas and bioethanol) and products (for example fibre products, absorption material, insulation material, fodder and extraction of specialized chemicals). Finally the most promising systems will be evaluated with respect to economy and environmental impact.

The project is a collaboration between the department for Agricultural Research in Northern Sweden (project leader) and the Department for Forest Biomaterial and Technology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
