The Department was formed in January 2017 from the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, The Department of Food Science and The Department of Microbiology.

We conduct research and education in the fields of chemistry, molecular biology, food science and microbiology.

In total, ca 100 PhD students, researchers and technical and administrative staff work at the Department.

We actively collaborate with industrial partners. This has resulted in several patents and tech companies. We also have two External Collaboration Specialists at the Department, specialising in Bioenergy and Food Quality. Read more about our collaboration with society here.

We develop protein-based functional nanomaterials and engineer novel enzymes for biofuel production. Photo: Cajsa Lithell.
We investigate the composition and properties of our most common foods, and explores how these are affected by different factors in the food value chain, from raw material to consumer product.
Our research has a strong basis in the isolation, characterization and commercialization of a wide spectrum of bacteria, archae, yeasts and filamentous fungi as well as their metabolites. Photo: Cajsa Lithell.
