Protein engineering to study protein self-assembly and to inhibit harmful protein aggregation

Last changed: 01 March 2022

Protein nanofibers provide strength and function to spider silk, bird feathers and barnacle cement.

However, unwanted protein aggregation (so-called amyloid formation) also occurs in human tissue and is associated with disease. We apply protein engineering to study protein self-assembly processes and to develop inhibitors of amyloid formation and diagnostic tools for amyloid detection.
