Course packages in Veterinary Nursing - Master's level

Last changed: 25 January 2024

Would you like to take your knowledge to advanced level? The department of Clinical Sciences, SLU, offers two new course packages in Veterinary Nursing at Master's level. The course packages give you an opportunity to widen and deepen your knowledge in both general and specialised areas, including development of the Veterinary Nursing subject.

There is one autumn (A) and one spring (B) package

The two-course packages make it possible for Veterinary nurses to continue their studies at an advanced level, as well as provide them with qualifications to start postgraduate (PhD) studies (if at least one of the course packages is combined with an independent project at an advanced level). The two-course packages contain courses in Veterinary nursing focusing on science and development, anaesthesia care and rehabilitation. The education at master´s level also includes activities to train a professional approach, e.g. collaboration within and between professions, as well as communication. The course packages are based on scientific, societal, ethical and sustainable aspects with a clear connection to research and clinical aspects of Veterinary nursing.

Course package A. “Advanced Veterinary nursing: Science and Anaesthesia care” (30 credits)

The introductory course presents Veterinary nursing in a scientific approach with the aim of preparing students for an upcoming independent project at an advanced level, as well as for developmental tasks within the Veterinary nursing area. The course includes setting up and presenting a project plan, basic knowledge of statistical methods relevant to the Veterinary nursing area and basic knowledge of laboratory animal science.

The course in advanced anaesthesia care focuses on peri-anaesthetic nursing based on the patient's medical condition, teamwork in the anaesthesia department and knowledge in handling emergencies.

Course package B. “Advanced Veterinary nursing: Rehabilitation” (30 credits)

The two rehabilitation courses cover areas on functional assessment, with application to rehabilitation of various injuries and illnesses. They focus on theoretical knowledge and some practical skills in a selection of assessment and rehabilitation methods, applicable to horses, dogs and cats.

The first rehabilitation course "Principles and scientific fundaments" focuses on tissue healing and adaptation to stress, pain physiology, exercise physiology, different types of physical functional impairments as well as their assessment and treatment.

The second rehabilitation course "Evidence based practice" focuses on rehabilitation for various injuries and illnesses.

Additional Independent project in Veterinary Nursing at an advanced level (30 credits)

For the Independent project in Veterinary Nursing, the student chooses to elaborate on a specific topic. This enables the student to further deepen the knowledge within a specific area, as well as contributes to the evidence based part of Veterinary nursing. The independent project provide a base for future development of personal qualifications and form a good foundation for postgraduate education (PhD).

All courses are in English, on-site combined with online education, and the course packages are thus for both Swedish and international students. These course packages at a master's level in Veterinary nursing do not entitle the student to apply for a licence to practice as a Veterinary nurse in Sweden.
