My current research is focused on improving our understanding of factors and processes in the control of mercury (Hg) transformations in soils and waters, such as the reduction and methylation of Hg(II) and demethylation of the neurotoxin methyl mercury (MeHg). In particular, I am interested in the importance of the chemical speciation of Hg for these transformation processes. In these matters, I am working closely together with Erik Björn's research group at Umeå University. Our recent findings that Boreal forest harvest increases the MeHg formation and runoff to Swedish surface waters by 12-20%, and that Black Alder swamps act as a sink for MeHg, may have implications for forest harvest practices and wetland restoration policies.

I am interested in the chemical and biotic factors that control the fate and transformation of heavy metals (such as mercury and arsenic) in soils and waters.

Since 2010 involved in research projects devoted to geochemical cycles of arsenic and mercury in the environment of the Baltic Sea, especially in the context of contamination from chemical munition dumpsites. Currently trying to better understand environmental fate of mercury, with a special focus on Hg(II) reduction in anaerobic conditions - proces that can naturally occur in low oxygen environments rich in organic matter (i.e. peatlands, deep-water sediments), potentially resulting in release of Hg(0) from former deposits. My personal interests include pollutants remobilization as a result of global climate change.

I am a visit phD student at the department of Forest Ecology and Management majoring in environmental science. I focus on mercury biogeochemistry, about the mechanisms of cellular mercury uptake by mercury methylating bacteria. Links: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Fanchao-Meng-15/research
